Putting a cap on an open area

Slice the attached file and notice how the first 'p' gets a cap on it when in the model that part is open. There are no flipped normals, and it's been run through netfabb. What's going on here?

im not seeing that joe. all the letters look pretty normal to me.

[Do you mean before or after it's sliced? This is what I see:
