Calling all wanhao 4 users

I was checking out my machine as it wasn't Holding the temperature.

I realised the fans on the extruder are on all the time.
There seems to be no controlling them. I checked the machine's fan setting during print. Which was set to off (which put its under the control of the software)

I've set cooling to 0 and with no entries. But neither method stops the fans from turning.
So I unmounted the fan for the ABS worked a treat. But I don't like the make do aspect.

So does any one understand what it is that's not right or is there simply no controlling it.

Is there anything I should look for in the G or M codes?

Any advice would be greatfull.

If I recall, the fans on the extruders are most likely tied to turn on when their respective extruders are being used and is turned on automatically by the firmware or wired that way on the board.

I think the fan job is to keep the stepper from overheating and also to keep the inlet for filamnet cold enough so it can be fed. That fan should always be on.
But you maybe mean the fan blowing on the object you are building? My machine has a switch for turning on or off.
The temperature you are reading is most likely from somewhere close enough the center, and enough far away. So even if the temperature oscillates 10 degrees the temperature inside the nozzle is more even.

The Wanhao D4 is a copy of the Replicator 1. The Extruder fans come on at 50oC and will remain on. This is by design and can't be changed and is not software controlled.

Now that said I have removed my fans from time to time and have found no difference in performance, however the purpose of the fans is to remove heat from the extruder block in an attempt to limit the amount of heat from traveling up the extruder throat and softening the plastic before extrusion.

If you have fitted the extra third fan and mounted it on the extruder head, and your board has the 'extra' MOSFET fitted, then yes that fan (pla cooling) is software switchable and is simply an ON/OFF affair variable speed is not supported.

If you go to maker ware desktop software, go to devices and then device preferences you can make changes to the fan settings.

This temperature can be changed in firmware only.
All firmware is opensource and can be changed with any reason...
