Create supports for tall parts without overhangs?

Is there a way to force creation of manually placed supports along the vertical walls of tall parts to add extra structure during printing? As far as I can tell it will only let your place them where the software detects an overhang collision above to determine the top cut off. It would be good to be able to define a height for supports manually that would normally extend to top of build volume thus unable to place them.

No automatic option for that, but you can manually add supports there

Re: Create supports for tall parts without overhangs?

I'm trying to add manual supports, but along sheer vertical flat walls of a model with a very small footprint. There are no "overhangs" though, so the sotware will not allow me to put any supports there since there isn't any geo above to "clip" it off. I want to manually define tower heights that sit up against the flat walls. Make sense?

No way to do that in S3D... at least that I know of.

You may need to manually add a thin top to the print. Maybe import the object into meshmixer or Sketchup. That way you can "create" the overhang which S3D identifes as needing support... or add manual support away from the object to keep the faces clean.

Maybe post up the STL file so we could test out different methods?
