Build Area Locked to First Process

I currently run a print farm with multiple printers. Up until V5, I've loved that the build area automatically updates with each process, makes it very easy to manage multiple printers.

In V5, the build area seems to be locked to the first process in the list. Why was this change implemented? Right now I have to drag the printer I need to the top of the list whenever I need to switch and this is getting frustrating very quickly.

Re: Build Area Locked to First Process

Do you have all of your printers saved into the S3D profile system? If so, there's no reason to keep so many separate processes loaded in the UI. Your profiles are already saved permanently, so even if you delete all of those processes you will still retain those settings.

Most of the tools in the software assume the processes will change for every print that you do. So if you are using the same settings for all parts on the bed, then you typically only need 1 process. Dual extrusion might require 2 processes an so on.

In short - Processes are meant to be temporary and changed constantly based on what you are printing. Profiles are where you store your permanent printer settings. If you follow those guidelines, then the 3D view should always be accurate for what you are printing next.

Wrong answer. Different folks in different situations develop different workflows that work for them. Your tools should be flexible, not based on assumptions about how you believe people should do their jobs. Those of us working in production environments can place a cost on every click, every additional dialog box, every additional step in slicing.

I've given up on V5, as it costs me more time with every slicing job. It might save a little print time, but my time costs more than machine time.

Re: Build Area Locked to First Process

I think it's important to point how how the software was designed and intended to be used. You are welcome to use it in other unintended ways, but that generally creates a bit of an uphill battle and isn't recommended.

For the easiest experience, follow the advice in my post above and use the intended Simplify3D profile system for your machine settings. There's about 10 different features and tools in the software that won't work unless you follow that methodology, so it's definitely the recommended approach. If you need to convert a process into the profile system, just double click on that process and click the "Save As New" button.
