Assumed extrusion shape in simplify?

Does anybody know what the assumed shape of an extrusion is in simplify? I've calculated the mm extruded / mm traveled ratio before and it does not come out to what I would expect if simplify were assuming the typical 'stadium' shaped extrusion. The link below is to slic3r's flow calculations page and shows the stadium extrusion shape.

I think Simplify3D most likely uses a simple circle or ellipse shape to calculate the extrusion amount. This makes the calculation faster but may not be completely accurate to the actual shape of the filament when it exits the nozzle. ;) ;)
