Wanting Simpler Layers

Let me see if I can explain this well. Bear with me.

Most of the time, when my print transitions from one shape to another, there is a sort of "ghosting" on the lower layer. I've included two pictures to show what I'm talking about.

Notice on Layer 49 there are some gaps in the layer - sort of a precursor to the shape that is about to be printed on top of it. Layer 50 shows the outline of the two shapes that will emerge as the print continues.

How can I get rid of these lower artifacts? I would rather the lower layer (Layer 49 here) just print continuously back and forth without all of the meandering around the future shapes.
I've tried "Merging All Boundaries" to no avail. Pretty sure that setting is turned on in the slice in these pictures.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Wanting Simpler Layers

One setting that might help is Edit Process Settings > Infill tab > Solid Infill Extra Expansion. If you set that to a higher number like 0.5mm, it will expand the solid regions underneath your top surfaces and might help fill any small gaps.

Another idea could be just changing the External Pattern Rotation angle. It looks like in your photo that the angle is the worst possible direction for that wall, so rotating it by 30 or 45 degrees may fill the gaps much better.

Re: Wanting Simpler Layers

Thanks, Jason, for the reply.

My question is Why are there gaps in the first place?

The second picture in my post (layer 50) is the beginning of a different shape, but there is no gap below the new shape. It's solid all the way up.

It seems like the most efficient way to print this transition would be to cycle across the flat surface just back and forth - without all of the gyrations around the circular shape that is to come. I increased the Solid Infill Extra Expansion like you suggested, but it did not go away, though the shadow underneath did lessen. Changing the angle of infill did not help either.

Is there a setting that controls these transitions? Or is it something in the coding that controls the pattern when changing from one shape to another as the print advances vertically? To me, the way the part is being sliced is less efficient and also presents a point of failure.

Re: Wanting Simpler Layers

I make good use of different Processes in Simplify 3D. It's probably what keeps me using the program. This print, like most of what I do, uses multiple processes to control/change things at different heights.

For this particular part I sliced only 3 of the 4 processes I need to complete the print. Since there is nothing to print above the flat portion (because the 4th process was not selected when slicing), there is no ghosting or foreshadowing of the different shape above.

Notice in this picture the nice, even extrusion lines with no circular shape to mess things up. Why does introducing the shape above affect the layer below when it does not need to?

Can you attach the factory file? That might make it easier for others to provide suggestions.
