troubleshooting layer bump/shift

hello. for quite a few years now, since the older version 4, i've gotten an issue where it looks like a shifted layer, but it's not really. if i make a cube and hollow it out, where that inner top layer is i get what looks like a shifted layer.

it happens at different heights (whether the cube is big or small), some sides are OK, others are not, different locations on the print bed OK some are not. i've finally decided to ask about it because maybe it's something i have setup wrong in the software.

i've always wondered if there's something wrong i'm doing in with top layers or wall printing order. i did try inside > out and outside > in walls and it made it a little better overall, but still it's the junction between the top layer and where the walls keep continuing up.

any ideas?

Re: troubleshooting layer bump/shift

There are some really good suggestions on this page if you think it's true layer shifts:
https://www.simplify3d.com/resources/pr ... -shifting/

However, looking at the picture, it's also possible that it's just varying extrusion rates that are causing a slight bulge in that area. Sometimes that happens if you are moving from moving extremely fast to really slow, since the extruder pressure might not have time to even out.

ooo. that's interesting never thought of that. i've never had layer shifts with S3D, but yes that is a great resource for quality issues i've looked at all of them lots of times over the years :)

i sense a test coming on soon. well, no. i've got about two more weeks of printing before all these boxes are printed. we are using them for space planning. i will try a smaller version and use different combinations of speeds.

i did have a co-worker print one of these on his printer at home using cura as a slicer he gets the same thing. but you do have to feel for them bc he's using a white translucent filament which is hard to see. my material is more glossy when it prints.

thanks!

Re: troubleshooting layer bump/shift

you know, it's printing two outer walls, the outermost slow, the inner most faster, then it prints a single infill in between them at highest speed. yeah i'll take a look at it all when this job is done. this could also explain why some are worse than others because the x-y dimensions are bigger. some 4x5" some are .75" x .75" etc.
