User Interface Improvements

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here so please don't skewer me if I'm out of line with any of these. I've been playing with S3D for a couple of months and I've become a bit annoyed with the user interface. Therefore I've compiled a short list of a couple of tweaks I think would go a long way towards improving general usage. If you guys have any further suggestions please list them and if I can edit this, I'll add them to the list as they come in so they don't get burried.

1) Pop-ups - They come up in the middle of the screen which is very annoying. I believe it would be much nicer if the options came in at a docked window area on the side much like Solidworks does when you define the parameters of a feature.

2) Color per process - I generally use processes for one extruder or another. It would be great if I could define each one of them as their own color to avoid confusion.

3) Processes Labels - I appreciate the fact that I can make customer labels for these but instead of the default name being Process #, can the default please be changed to the name of the profile template being used while still being allowed to edit it as I see fit? This way it would call out the machine, and which extruder is being used or anything else I wish.

4) Support Material Removal - My machine does great at printing horizontal holes without support so I often remove the support. Sometimes these holes are very long and clicking 1000x to remove the support is very tedious. Could there be an option in which I hit control and it removes the next 10 support blocks or something similar?

5) Model Rotation - In addition to number 1, It would be great if when I'm in the Rotate menu, there would be a gyroscope on the model that I could click and drag and move the model that way as well as the current method.

6) Feature Request improvements - As easy as it is to do this post, I feel it would be great if we could vote on the feature requests. This way, we could indicate to you how important some features are compared to others. The ones that get the most upvotes get the highest priority where as ones that get negative votes get scrubbed.

7) Cartesian axis indicator - having it in the middle is quite trouble some. When a part is in the center, I can no longer see the x-y-z arrows. I think these would be better served if they were located in the front left corner of the build plate

8) Copy & Paste - Add the functionality of Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy models instead of using menus.

I think I'll end it at 8 so not to overwhelm you guys. Overall I like the program a lot but it still lacks a nice polishing to the user interface.

Re: User Interface Improvements

Many of these things were added in the latest version 3.0 release

- Windows all now restore to their previous location. So if you position a window on the side of your screen, the next time you open it, it will appear there instead of in the center
- You can color the preview depending on what toolhead is being used. Just enter preview mode by clicking "Prepare to Print" and then choose "active toolhead" for the coloring mode
- A nice new feature for support material allows you to only add support structures that are touching the build platform. This means that you wouldn't get any supports inside those tiny holes you mentioned, or inside your part where they can also be difficult to remove.
- The model manipulation was completely overhauled for version 3.0. If you want to see a 3D "gyroscope" as you mentioned for model rotation in all 3 axes, just go to Tools > Options, and enable the "always show full 3D transform gizmo" option. Then click on your model and press R to bring up the rotation gizmo. This video explains it in more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIhpUfCorSM
- Copy and paste were added using the standard Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V shortcuts. There were dozens of other shortcuts added too. If you click on the menu bar, you can see many of them.
