Skeinforge has this in their "skin" plugin, but it could be so much better. I believe all it does is slice the perimeters in to n layers. (2 isi usually sufficient for me, but 3-4 can make some very nice prints indeed!). Ideally, the software would actually slice the model at the skin thickness and combine layers that aren't perimeters, and take special care to handle the slight changes that might be present at the interface of the perimeter and loops. (like, printing an extra loop as a perimeter to normalize the interface).
I don't particularly like printing my entire model at .1mm layer height, let alone .05. It gets old waiting for the printer. The outside is all I really care about being at that layer height anyhow. Its also said, though I've never tested, that thicker layers are stronger. So the skin option keeps me going back to skeinforge though I dislike everything about it beyond skin and the quality of the parts I have it spit out!
But wait, why stop there? You already allow different print settings for different regions of the model, why not do the same for different parts of the print? Individual settings for perimeters, loops, infill, support, raft, etc. Again, not to harp on skeinforge, but it does have some limited ability to do this (if you wade through its monstrously hideous user interface and correlate parameters to one another lol). Seems this would be a pretty easy way of implementing the UI. The actual toolpath will be harder to make optimal, but why not release a sub-optimal skeinforge-alike option in the mean time. I really would love to ditch it and use this full time
