Alternating Materials per layer

Short of editing g-code manually, is there any way alternate tools by layer? I'm trying to mix PETG colors. I know at least one other user has asked this question and gotten no replys.
The placeholders for identifying old-tool and new-tool are not available in the layer change script. Can they be made available? This is one more instance where a broader scope for all placeholders would be nice!
dithering colors by layer can look pretty good using any material, but when using transparent PETG, the effect can be pretty slick!
