Factory files

I am still learning.
I have seen mention of factory files, could someone please tell me what they are and why I would use them, Thanks. Ernie

In 3D printing there are a lot of different file types to keep up with. While .stl files are the actual model, the .factory file is the model along with all the saved processes you have created. Here is a link to some nice info that helped me when I first started. The last article in particular deals with file types.
