I would like to have an on screen ruler so I can see the dimensions of an object before printing.

A built-in on-screen ruler option would be handy...

A work around would be to create an STL with ruler markings in the XYZ. Then load with you machine preferences along with the printbed (Preferences -> Machine -> Priner Models).

Something like that... ideally the stl would be rotated to sit at the origin, maybe not as bulky too. :)

The "Cross-section View" feature could also work as a measurement tool.

Does S3D actually not have a tool to show the outer dimensions of a bounding cube for each object? I kind of need that.. :\

It does. Just double-click on the part. It shows the X, Y and Z dimensions of the model.
