First layer AFTER raft is printing too fast!

Hi guys, I have attached a factory file of a 20 mm calibration box
20mm_Calibration_Box.factory
(4.21 KiB) Downloaded 488 times
, to be printed with a raft in ABS at 0.25 mm layer height. The Default Printing Speed is set to 50 mm/s, which is supposed to be used for infills if I understand correctly. I find that the first layer after the raft is being printed way too fast. See the attached picture where the first layer after raft is color-coded green, indicating it is printing well above 40-50 mm/s. This is way too fast for the first layer to stick to the raft. On small things like this it is probably fine but on big, circular objects the first layer fails to stick and just gets dragged around by the extruder.

I tried setting the outline & solid infill underspeeds to 25% which should reduce the speeds on these parts to 12.5 mm/s, however this seems to affect only the subsequent layers of the object (color-coded blue) while the first layer AFTER the raft is still being printed too fast (still green). It is as if the software is speeding up the first layer on purpose which effectively ruins every print that requires a raft.

I know I can just reduce the default speed to something like 30 mm/s but that would slow down the entire print unnecessarily. Reducing the raft separation distance may help but this would make the raft harder to remove (I am using 0.2 mm). The first layer settings in the layer tab doesn't help as I am using a raft. I have no intention of using a brim.

Is there any way that we can explicitly control the speed of the first layer AFTER the raft (without using separate processes which is sort of fuzzy and hard to use)? If not, this would be a very very helpful feature!

Thank you for your help!

I have the same problem, is there no way to change this behaviour?

Did you get a response to this mate? I am having the same issue. I need rafts for accuracy and having the first layer shit itself is no good.

Yeah the support guy basically told me to use a separate process so that I can control the speed. Personally I think this is a pain to do so I stopped using the raft altogether. I level my bed real close to the nozzle, use 80% first layer height and really slow first layer speed to make sure it sticks. Increase your first layer width if you need to. I always used a raft before but due to this software glitch I have learnt to print raftless, so, yay?

Also, mix 1 part white PVA glue with 2 parts water then spread it onto your build plate before printing. Sticks really well, less health issues and much easier to remove the print compared to ABS slurry.

Hope this helps.

Is it even possible to use 2 processes (1 for the raft and 1 for the object)? I don't get it right because the start and stop heights doesn't seem to include the raft.

Re: First layer AFTER raft is printing too fast!

Can I get some details on this multi raft process please

As can bee seen on mine I have warp speed on the first part layer.

I need to slow it down without going into the gcode and doing it manualy for 2 layers

Re: First layer AFTER raft is printing too fast!

I know this thread is a few months old now. However I would like to comment. I find the speed is not the root cause. If you look at your gcode you will find that the first layer of your printed part after the raft is too thick. This in turn causes your extruder to turn faster. (If I understood the speed problem in this thread properly). I've not yet found out why Simplify3D is doing this. I have the first layer height set to 100% with a layer heigt of 0.3mm. I have 3 layers of raft printed so the 4th layer is the part. Here is the output of the layer heights:

Layer 1: 0.39mm (raft)
Layer 2: 0.39mm (raft)
Layer 3: 0.39mm (raft)
Layer 4: 0.77mm (part) <-- here is the problem
Layer 5: 0.3 (which is the configured layer height)

So basically it looks like there is a glitch and the first layer for the part is double the previous raft layers. I have checked "Disable raft base layers".

Still trying to track this down. Anyone have any ideas?
