First layer settings

so i am using simplify3d and i cant seem to get my first layer to set right. when i use a raft it all works fine the extruder is slowed down on first layer and it stick wonderfully, but when i disable the raft it doesn't slow down on the first layer
this cause the first layer not to stick right.

so my issue is with out a raft my extruder wont slow down on the first layer.

i do have a cooling fan but i dont have to set to kick on till after layer 1, i may try using it on the first layer then going from there. im using the zebra plate.
also any suggestions on settings would be great.

settings:
material: White PLA
temp: 210
extrusion Multiplier: .95
extrusion width manual .4mm
Layer settings:
layer height: .2mm
first layer settings:
height: 100%
width: 110%
speed: 20%
Other:
print speed: 80mm/sec
outline underspeed: 50%
solid infill underspeed: 80%
support structure underspeed: 80%
x/y axis movement speed: 60 mm/sec
z Axis movement speed: 40mm/sec

Re: First layer settings

Go to the Layer tab and adjust the "first layer speed" option. That determines the printing speed of the first layer. I just checked it and it works correctly. Reducing that value will slow down the printing speed for the first layer.

Re: First layer settings

Did anyone ever resolve this issue? I have the same problem. It seems like the first layer settings only work if the raft is enabled. When not using a raft the first layer prints at the same speed as the rest of the model.

This advice from Carl works...I've tested it as well...and the first layer (ie the one that touches the bed!!) is printed at the percentage specified in the First Layer settings. I tested WITH and WITHOUT a raft.

Don't fall into the trap where you have a negative global Y axis offset....and you're not seeing the first layer of the model in the preview because its underneath the bed graphic, but you are seeing the first layer of the raft cos' its thicker!

Re: First layer settings

I have adjusted the first layer speed 100 different times. It only works when I print using a raft. I am using a Makerbot Replicator 5th Gen this problem has plagued me since the beginning when using Simplify3D. I LOVE everything else about the software and have been able to fine tune my machine to run very nice models but the first layer speed setting has always perplexed me.

Re: First layer settings

Would you be able to supply a factory file for an example where you're having problems getting the first layer to print slowly so someone could take a look at it.

File menu===> Save factory file as....

Re: First layer settings

No problem. This is just a simple thing I downloaded. All my models behave the same way.

Re: First layer settings

Just downloaded your file and viewed it.....and the behaviour for the first layer is as I would expect.

With raft....first layer of raft printed slowly:
FirstLayer1.JPG
Without raft....first layer of shape printed slowly:
FirstLayer2.JPG

And from the GCode file for second test:
First line speed: Perimeter 1200, fill 2400
Second line speed: Perimeter 1773, infill 2238 and 3358 depending on what its printing

Re: First layer settings

I agree. The software shows the first layer speed to be correct. But when I actually print the model the first layer speeds are incorrect. Here is a link to a zip file that contains 2 videos showing the difference in speed.

Re: First layer settings

It appears the problem has something to do with Makerbot's latest firmware. I backed down to a previous version and the problem went away.
