I am trying to print various models with overhanging surfaces and placed some of the supports manually right at the edge.

However, when slicing, S3D removes those and the print comes with somewhat crapped out edges.

How do I force it to put supports on the edge of the print where I manually placed them ?

Manual support should be generated if you add it.....

Couple of questions.....
Do you have support switched on in your profile?
If not, what response do you give to the "Do you want to enable support generation?" If "No", try again but answer "Yes".

If its not this, attach your factory file so someone can take a look... File=>Save factory file.

Manual supports is enabled. It DOES generate the supports, it just removes some of the supports near the edge, no matter how many I put there manually.

Perhaps it is better now.

Additional, it fails with the temperatures, because you havn't check on "Wait for ..." in all categories.

And there are issues in the model however. Let it run through netfabb-repair.

How did you fix it ? Did u run it through netfab and checked the temp stabilization or did you do also something else ? I would like to know since I see this problem on other models.

Its not removing any of the areas you've defined. What is happening is that support is being generated within these areas...and the support that is being generated is not good enough to support what you want it to.

I've made some changes to your settings and to the number of defined support columns...and its looking much better. Modifed factory file attached.

I've change the support pattern and density to increase its supporting capabilities....and to make it a bit easier to remove! I've added a dense top layer. And finally, I've thinned out the manual support...again to make it easier to remove....and added in a few extra bits under unsupported edges you had missed.

Best to give it a try....and cross fingers....

Thank you Doug, will give it a try and the settings you mentioned. I want to learn how to do it myself so I understand what is wrong in the process that I used.

How do I edit the factory file so I can understand the settings that were changed ?

The factory file is a means of saving the machine parameters, the source of the model, the manual support, and the print profile. It isn't a discreet file that can be viewed and edited.

I documented the changes I made in my post. You'll have to view the model in S3D to see the support placement and the profile tabs to see the changes I made to the support settings. What you can do is open two instances of S3d and load your existing into one, and my version in the other. You'll be able to see the differences....
