gap infill stacking up

nozzle: 0.4mm
extrusion width: 0.66mm
PLA

My printer's well calibrated and prints turn out great.

However I notice that whenever gap infill goes down it's slightly above the height of the surrounding peripheral layers.

That causes a scratching sound when the print head passes over a gap fill region.

And if, for odd reasons, there are several layers of gap fill one on top of the other (I try to avoid that now!) compression can get so bad one has to stop the print.

Anyone know what is going on during gap fill?

It looks as though the corners are so tight that, if the extruder doesn't compensate on each one by extruding less, then it's logical that there's too much plastic on the inside of the bends.

Anyone have any ideas or views on this?

Re: gap infill stacking up

Without seeing your factory file, it's a guessing game......but you could try reducing your infill extrusion width....or printing sparse infill every two layers.
