Machine presets for UM2 and Flashforge Creator Pro weird

The default Simplify3D machine presets don't make sense and should probably be amended. Here's what bugs me.
  • PLA is preset for extrusion at 230° in the Flashforge profile (i.e. more like ABS) but at 205° in the Ultimaker profile. It should be 205-210 in both.
  • Print speed is preset at 41.7mm/s in the UM2 profile. ".7", really? In Cura's own presets it's always 50mm/s. What is this number based on?
I'm using the latest Simplify3D version 3.0.2.

Re: Machine presets for UM2 and Flashforge Creator Pro weird

1) It's very normal for the FF printers to print PLA at higher temperatures since they are mostly clones of the original Makerbot machines which also used the same higher temperatures. I personally think it has to do with the different plastic that FF and MakerBot use, and maybe also some to do with the extruder/hot end design. But it's totally normal to have a FF at 230C using FF PLA and a UM2 at 195C using UM PLA. But of course, you can change the temperatures to whatever you wish if you disagree.

2) Sounds like you're looking at the speeds in mm/s. The printer actually sends and receives speeds in mm/min. So if you open up a gcode file, you will notice that every F-value is in mm/min. So the print speed for the UM2 is 2500 mm/min. If you want to make it 3000 mm/min (50mm/s) feel free to edit it.

Re: Machine presets for UM2 and Flashforge Creator Pro weird

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the explanation. So, it's mostly heritage but I you purchase plastic from an independent producer it probably doesn't make much sense to go with the high PLA settings without at least checking whether it's suitable.

Now, I understand the 41.7mm/s x 60 = 2500mm/min. Makes sense in that context. Simplify3D Ultimaker code seems to be much slower than the Cura equivalent. So, I'll try to speed that up.

Cheers
