S3d not printing built in supports

I was trying to print this croc: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:941177/#files
Specifically crocz.stl with the built in supports.

When I load it into s3d it looks fine:

but when I go to save toolpath to disk it got rid of the supports:

I am printing on an ultimaker 2+ using ths default ultimaker 2 settings that have worked for other prints.

Any ideas what I should check/change?

Well first of all, those supports are only about 0.3mm thick, and you set the software to use a fixed 0.4mm extrusion width, so that's why they aren't printing (more info about this here: https://www.simplify3d.com/support/prin ... ng-printed)

But more importantly, I would STRONGLY recommend using the supports that S3D generates natively instead of trying to do it yourself from the CAD package. S3D does a lot of really smart things with their supports, and you lose all that functionality if you manually model the supports yourself like in the model you posted.

So I would just select the version WITHOUT supports added ;)

Thank you for the response.

I will stick to the s3d generated supports that have worked great for many other prints.

Hey CompoundCarl,

I don't quite understand the you mean by 0.3mm thick support. What/where do you refer that to? As for fixed 0.4 extrusion width, this I get it is under Extruder/Overview, but how should I set those parameters, say deducing by what?

Lastly, there is not any paragraphs describing solutions to not able to print supports from the URL you mentioned. Did I missed something?

Thanks!

Oh wait, I kinda get it. It is like I have to go to the Support section to play around those parameters.
:geek: :)

It has to do with thin-wall slicing. If the modeled supports are thinner than the extrusion then S3D will not print them.

If you're still confused about what is referred to as thin walls, take a read through this thread and the threads it references: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3471
