Managing Profiles

Hello,

Did a search but did not find the specifics of this topic addressed.

We are a makerspace using Simplify3D to print to 5 different printers, over 60 members, and open access to our space. We have a team of experienced 3D printers that setup profiles for each printer and distribute them between multiple computers used for slicing. Works well except when inexperienced users make changes to these profiles and save rhese changes.

Some times more inexperienced users are changing settings during their slice/print and the changes get saved to the profile. Future users of the same PC slice their designs but don't realize that changes to our default profile s,have been made and this effects their print. We can resort to backup profiles stored elsewhere to restore proper function but this is a bit of effort and coordination with many users with different experience levels.

In addition to import/export of profiles to move profiles between multiple computers we would like to find a method for protecting a profile from permanent changes. We would allow the current user to make changes to the profile to accomplish their print but prevent those changes from being saved by accident therefore altering the default settings.

Any ideas for a way to accomplish this within the current operation of the Simplify3D software?

Thanks!

Re: Managing Profiles

You can click OK at the bottom to save the process. That way then can still make changes to the process for printing. Just don't click "Update Profile" since that will overwrite the base profile.

Re: Managing Profiles

You might be able to locate where the profile data is stored (plist on OSX, registry on Windows) and update the permissions so that S3D can't write to them. You'd then have to update the permissions again to update any settings again. I've not tested this, though, so I have no idea what else it might break.

Re: Managing Profiles

Holy cow!

We totally need "Locked Profiles"!!!

I'm actually serious. I have basically destroyed many profiles which were linked to specific parts made and tied together by those settings. I don't mean I literally destroyed the profiles like I had to have them back or printing was a horror, but in the sense that the reference link between them was lost should I want to examine past history to make valid work comparisons.

I could go onto say that taking notes is a great way to keep data, but determining that a profile was good at something once and "locking" it would reassure that it's ready to go as it was, never tampered with, and that means a lot to me.

Of course there are ways to edit file permissions, like stated above. But when we work within S3D, a "lock" or "locked" icon/symbol for the profile would be great to quickly spot visually.

Re: Managing Profiles

It would help for sure! I keep a few read-only template factory files with some known good configurations (and special combinations of processes) in them.

You can also look at past settings by importing them from a gcode file's header. The whole profile except for autoconfigures will come in if you do File > Import FFF Profile and pick a gcode file, or you can just read the header for the setting you're interested in.
