Rep 1 dual prints 20mm to the left on left extruder

I'm using a Replicator 1 Dual and find that prints using the left extruder print 20mm to the left of those made with the right extruder. The distance between the extruders is 33mm, so there is a correction being applied somewhere, but it's not the right correction.

The right extruder is correctly centered. I do have the correct settings in Prefs->Machine and have selected the correct firmware in Tools->Firmware Configuration both for the Profile (Sailfish/Makerbot) and the Machine Profile (Rep 1 dual). I have no other problems printing with this set-up.

My rep 1 is running Sailfish 7.6. I have not tried any dual extrusions yet.

Any suggestions as to where to look?

Re: Rep 1 dual prints 20mm to the left on left extruder

More info.

The offset is 18.6mm, and the same model (20mm test cube) prints centrally on both extruders with Replicator G (latest Sailfish version), so it's not the Replicator.

Looking at Rep G geode, I see that it only swaps the tool heads to switch extruders (TO->T1 throughout). Simplify 3D swaps them too, but also outputs different X coordinates, apparently trying to correct for the extruder X offset, unnecessarily.

Re: Rep 1 dual prints 20mm to the left on left extruder

I think you probably have that backwards. It's much more likely that RepG is applying offsets to the coordinates and S3D is not. You don't enter your toolhead offsets anywhere into S3D, so it wouldn't know how to offset things.

I wonder if this is something that could be fixed by modifying the Sailfish EEPROM settings. What happens if you make the left extruder offset 18.6mm larger?

Re: Rep 1 dual prints 20mm to the left on left extruder

Nope. Rep G does not apply offsets. I diffed the gcode because I wasn't sure how it wad handled. It's hard to mix the code up too because the creator is in the code.

I don't enter toolhead offsets into S3D, but it does know that I have a Rep 1 Dual and am using Sailfish, so it has the stock offset (33mm). The Rep 1 has small offsets (fractions of a mm) programmed into it that I can adjust which are automatically applied to the left nozzle as it prints. Offsets used to be handled differently, but then Makerbot changed things so that the gcode had fewer differences for tool changes.

If I change the offsets in the print, it will no longer work correctly with Rep G or Makerware.

You're looking at the raw gcode though right? that still has to get converted to binary and there could be offsets applied there

Raw gcode. I could look at the binary but haven't done that.

Re: Rep 1 dual prints 20mm to the left on left extruder

Sounds to me as though when Sailfish was installed, the installation and setup directions were not followed,

http://makerbot.com/sailfish/install/
http://makerbot.com/sailfish/setup/

Specifically the step in the installation about using MakerWare to write down your toolhead offsets before upgrading. Then, later setting those toolhead offsets with RepG 40r23-Sailfish after installing Sailfish. Until you do that, you have who knows what values for the X and Y toolhead offsets. MBI's 7.x firmware stores them using different units and in a different memory location. (Sailfish matches what MBI did in their 5.x and 6.x firmwares.) Moreover, it is critical that you use MakerWare to see the values in MBI's firmware and not RepG. And it's critical that you use RepG 40r23-Sailfish to see them in Sailfish. (You can use MakerWare if you download and install the MakerWare EEPROM map files which are a download of the Sailfish Thing at thingiverse.com.)

Until you properly set the X and Y toolhead offsets, you will continue to see this behavior.

Left and right are perfectly positioned if I slice with Rep G. Is that still possible if the offsets are not set correctly?
