Robo3D R1+ Z offset issue

I've been dialing the startup script in my process, but not having much luck.\
The M565 command seems to sometimes have an effect and sometimes not.
It should be about 0.6mm (not sure if it should be + or minus in simplify)
The machine is trammed.
I either see the head flying in air laying down threads, or mashed into the bed scraping off the hairspray.

G28 ; home all axes
G1 Z25 F5000 ; lift Z by 25mm
G29 ; run auto-level
M565 Z 2; Set Z offset (been running this from -2 to +2 with unpredictable effect)
G1 Z50 F5000 ;Lift the head
G1 X1 Y1 Z10; Run back to start
G1 X0 Y0 Z0; Put the head at zero
