I really hate generalizations like this. Just because it works with one machine but not another doesn't put the blame entirely on the driver. There are standards, and if they are not followed all types of results can happen....

On win 7 I went to properties-> comparability and selected disable visual theme

Bit of a waste of time commenting on an issue that was discussed three years ago. There have been many Windows system and driver updates since then...………..

I’m happy to announce that this issue should be resolved now in the latest 4.1.0 release. This issue with the black screen where the 3D view normally would be shown was reproduced and then corrected by our development team. This will work more automatically in the future by identifying problematic graphics cards and screen resolution combinations and adjusting the rendering mode automatically! This was just one of many improvements to the software. All of which are detailed on our Release Notes page.
