No Top Solid Layers wanted

Hi,

I was trying to print the 20mm hollow Box from The essential calibration set on Thingiverse:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5573/#files

Infill: 0%
Bottom solid layers: 2
Top solid layers: 0

This should leave the top solid layers away so the cube is open from the top, right?

However. SimplyFy 3D 3.0.2 doesn't do that.

When I also set the bottom solid layers to 0, the bottom solid layers AND the top solid layers disappear, which in this would be correct, but I want bottom solid layers and no top solid layers, which doesn't seem to work for me. I let other people look at this as well and they are encoutering the same issue.

Look like a bug to me?

Regards

Re: No Top Solid Layers wanted

You have the right idea, but you're using the wrong model. And you're probably following a calibration guide written for another program and trying to use it for S3D. You want to calibrate differently since this is a different software.

So do this
  • Download the "20mm-box.stl" file (note: NOT the hollow one)
  • Set the software to use 0% infill, 2 bottom solid layers, 0 top solid layers, and only 1 perimeter outline
This will give you a perfect single outline cube so that you can measure the wall thickness. You can then adjust the extrusion multiplier and extrusion width settings in the software until the measured width matches the value that is specified.

The reason the hollow box doesn't work is because the inside of that part is hollow. So when you get to the very top, you will need to print the roof of the cube. Because you have 2 bottom solid layers, it will print the 2 lowest layers of that roof. Now it won't print any of the top layers, but it doesn't really matter since it already printed the bottom ones. Also, you will have much better luck using a single perimeter outline as I mentioned above since S3D sets the extrusion size differently than other programs.

Hi Joe,

thanks for clearing this up ;)
