strange extrusions on non-printing moves

I just purchased S3D today and am already very happy with it. I did have a problem with unwanted extrusions when the hotness moved to a different section of a large print. The attached photo shows what I am talking about. These lines seem to have disappeared round about the 4th layer, and haven reoccurred so far, even though the head repositioned several times since. Any suggestions?

Is there a way to know what layer the printer is currently working on?

That looks like stringing. What material are you using? You might want to try adjusting your retraction settings or enabling the "avoid crossing outlines" feature since that would help a lot with a part like this.

It does look like stringing, but much heavier than I am used to seeing. The material is PLA at 195°, bed at 60° (at the point the stringing was happening). I happened only when printing the tentacles where the infill moves were quite short. Once the print got to the body region, there were on the nits other than one on the top of the left eye. I'll try adjusting the retraction and bring some of the octopus again.
