[SOLVED] Windows 10 S3D crash error on startup

Morning everyone,

Yesterday upon booting up S3D which had been previously working fine on my windows 10 computer it started immediately crashing before I could do anything in the program. I did have this happen a few days prior but a simple computer restart solved the issue.

What I have tried so far
-I updated my video card drivers restarted and still the issue occurs.
-I tried clearing the regiistry for S3D following another post on a similar issue (for some reason I was only able to dlete 3 of the 4 files found inthis registry)
-I redownloaded S3D and reinstalled yet my old processes still show up when I boot it right before it crashes.

What im thinking is that a new profile I made is causing the crashing possibly because of the title "1.2PLA" maybe the program doesnt like "." in the naming. The stranger part is even with a fresh reinstall when I open S3D it still shows the three processes I had from before instead of going to the wizard.

Any thoughts on how to get this fixed would be great! Had a few projects ready for the weekend!

Re: S3D crash error on startup

I have profiles with a period in the name and it doesn't cause a crash for me, so that's likely not the reason.

If your old processes are still showing it means you didn't fully clear the registry. I'm not sure what you mean when you say you could only delete three of the four files. Do you mean keys? If so, which keys?

If you delete the key HKCU/Software/Simplify3D/S3D-Software/FFFWindow (please don't do this unless you are sure you know what you're doing and even then, back it up first), all your profiles will be removed. Next time you start S3D, assuming it doesn't immediately crash any more, you should run the configuration assistant (from the help menu) to select your printer again.

If this doesn't help, providing some details of the crash report might help with further troubleshooting.

Re: S3D crash error on startup

Okay perfect then I can rule that one out.

So here is a pic of what shows up in the regedit window, before there were 4 items in this folder now only one remains but I cant delete it

I cant say I know much about what im doing in terms of registry editing in fact I cant find the file your referring to...not sure if it was one of the the other 3 registrys that ended up actually deleting when I tried. I dont see Simplify3D in any other place other then HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SFOTWARE

Thanks for the help

The Simplify3D key has a chevron to the left of it which suggests there are subkeys beneath it. If you click the chevron, does it not expand the branch?

You sir are correct. Haha I think its clear I wasnt sure what I was doing in this area. I went ahead and deleted everything in the folder your specified, S3D now opens up! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Re: S3D crash error on startup

Ugh short lived victory it seems. Just opened it up again (did not even restart my computer or anything) and im getting the same error. Perhaps I need to clear all registrys associated with S3D? I noticed that although all my profiles were gone I still had 3 profiles listed when I was briefly able to use it.

Re: S3D crash error on startup

I don't understand what you mean when you say that all your profiles were gone but you still had three listed.

To delete all S3D's keys, just right click on the Simplify3D key as shown on the left side of the image you posted and select delete. There is no need to delete keys individually. If you do delete all S3D's keys, you will have to provide your S3D login details again next time you launch the software.

You still have not provided details of the error you get when the crash occurs. Is your computer otherwise working properly? You could have a hardware issue that's causing corruption. It could be overheating, bad RAM or a bad HDD. If this keeps happening, I would suggest having your computer looked at.

Re: S3D crash error on startup

Sorry let me clarify, in the bottom left of the S3D interface are all your listed processes and within a process you can select a profile. When I deleted the recommend registry the drop down where I would choose my profile was empty yet I had listed under processes Process1, Process2, Process3 (default names that S3D assigns when you add a new process and forget to remain it).

In terms of providing details for the error im not sure how I would get that information as in previous version of windows you would usually have a additional details tab when a crash like this occurs but with windows 10 the only option I have is Close program when the popup comes up. I would gladly provide that information if you let me know how to attain it.

Im going togo ahead and delete it all then and see what happens then.

Re: S3D crash error on startup

Yea thats odd. So I cleared the entire registry file for S3D and like you said it prompted me to log in and walk through the config assitant. Did so and the program ran fine. All my profiles and processes were cleared this time. I closed it and reopened and got the error again.
