Extruder FLow Rate

Hi All

I am now trying out the new Lulzbot Micro SL extruder that has 0.25mm nozzle with 3mm ABS.

I originally thought that by simply changing the nozzle diameter the corresponding flow rate calculated by Simplify3d would do the trick. Sadly 20 Jams later this is not the case.

After reading several posts it seems 4 parameters have to be set.

Extruder width
Layer Height
Multiplier
Printing Speeds

Is this correct?

If not please enlighten me as to which parameters are relevant and what formula and value to not breach to avoid Jams. Further if I am to use Extruder width I would have to take off the Auto feature and that may lead to complications if the widths used require multiples for 1st layer etc.

I of course only get this major problem for Nozzle widths less than 0.4mm. I thought incorrectly it was my firmware or filament needing drying etc but all printers work fine once the Nozzle diameters is at east 0.4mm.

With the dynamics of Nozzle this nice to have feature has become a must have for all 3d Slicers/Printing tools.

Re: Extruder FLow Rate

Speaking in terms of S3D 4.01
Nozzle diameter set to actual nozzle size (.25)
Extrusion width set to auto for now. Once you get it working you can set it smaller if needed
Extrusion Multiplier .. for my setup would be someplace around .90, I would print test squares to determine exact setting
Filament diameter on the Other tab set to 3mm
Layer height, would do .2 to start
First layer height on the layer tab (I use 100%)
Temp should be filament manufacture spec I use 235C, heated bed 110C, enclosure temp 100F
Starting height of the nozzle should be set correctly for .2 layer height, however that is done on your printer
Speed is important but not the critical factor. If you are using ABS with a .25mm nozzle then I would assume you are printing something small and set my speed to say 30mmS to start.
Good luck!

Re: Extruder FLow Rate

In addition to what Air said.

When I changed a machine from a 0.4mm nozzle to a 0.2mm nozzle I did this in S3D.

Took my current working profile for PLA and changed -
Nozzle diameter to 0.2
Extrusion width to 0.2
Extrusion multiplier stayed the same
Temps stayed the same
First layer changed to 0.1
Increased first layer to something like 140% the idea was to get the max thickness (80% of nozzle size) for the nozzle size which I think was like .16
Speed cut to 20mm/s

Re: Extruder FLow Rate

Many thanks for sharing your configurations.

My original challenge was to avoid filament Jam occurring early in printing job. I overcome this by setting the multiplier to 0.5. The resultant printed model showed poor adhesion between layers which I could then crumble in my hands under slight pressure. All remained was strands of string. I then tried your parameters and now gone back to filament Jam early in print job.

I never been so confused. My last attempt was using the following:

Extruder Temp 230c
Multiplier .90
nozzle diameter 0.25
Layer height 0.20
Speed 25mm/s

Job jammed after 4th layer but that sheet was strong not brittle. Can the Zoffset create poor layer adhesion of that only affects bed to initial layer adhesion?

Thanks again for any further insight you can share!
