Even though my copy of S3D was activated and licensed it looks like until I unblocked it from the firewall it was causing this problem.
The only reason I discovered it is because I attempted to run the machine setup wizard again and discovered it was blocked.
This is poor license management on S3D's part. If there is a suspected issue regarding the licensing status of the software it should be made clear to the user. Sabotaging slicing operations in this way is not a reasonable way of handling things.
