what does the total_filament prepend do?

hi all, I have S3d and a Davinci 1.0 printer. Under the FFF settings, in "additional terminal commands" I see a pre-made option for setting the total_filament. If I change this, does it change the filament usage in the gcode sent to the printer? It just isn't clear how this actually gets used... thanks!

I'm pretty sure that is important so that the bot can correctly display progress and things like that
