Print skirt around all models as a group?

Hi guys!

I'm a new Simplify3D user. Before that I used Slic3r. Simplify3D is a great upgrade and I like it a lot. However, there is a single feature from Slic3r which I can't get to work in Simplify3D: I love to use a skirt to get the nozzle flowing well. When I had multiple models in Slic3r, it would always generate the skirt around all of these models as a group, which was great, because there usually were many smaller models. However, in Simplify3D the skirt is created around each individual model, rather than all models as a group. That means that for small models the skirt is not enough to get the nozzle flowing nicely. I realize that I could just tell it to print multiple skirts, but that is a waste of filament and space.

Can I somehow get Simplify3D to generate the Skirt around all models as a group rather than each individual model?

How do you handle this issue?

Many thanks and all the best,
Michael

Re: Print skirt around all models as a group?

Welcome to the boards! A few tips for using skirts in S3D - if your models are close enough together to where their skirts would be touching, then the software will automatically combine them so that they are printed as one single group. So if you move your models closer together, they will print as a single group.

You may also find that it's better to increase the skirt offset so that you don't have to move the models to close together. Either option works as long as the skirts themselves would be touching.

Hope that helps! :D

Re: Print skirt around all models as a group?

Awesome, many thanks!

I chose yet another way. I defined two processes. For the first process I selected one of the larger models, this process had a skirt defined. For the other models I set a second process jus without the skirt. Since Simplify3D will always g-code the first process first, that ensured that I had a nice skirt just around the first model to get the nozzle flowing.

That works well.

Your inputs are also very useful, that makes sense. Many thanks :-)

All the best,
Michael
